Hardware giants invest in open weight infrastructure
Industrial manufacturers need frontier capability without handing their operational data and model pipelines over to a closed API. Mistral's three billion euro Series D, detailed in the company's release, shows that the capital behind open-weight models is increasingly supplied by hardware and semiconductor leaders like Samsung and ASML.
When an organization builds entirely around proprietary hosted endpoints, it inherits external roadmaps, price volatility, and data sovereignty risks that European compliance teams reject. Open-weight models running on dedicated compute offer an escape from that dependency. Controlling the weights, the audit logs, and the host environment is the practical architecture for deploying intelligence inside complex industrial workflows.
Compute concentration among US hyperscalers remains a stubborn challenge for Europe, but direct backing from advanced manufacturing gives sovereign infrastructure real staying power. Enterprises do not have to accept proprietary lock-in as an unavoidable tax for adopting frontier AI.
