Watermarking Claude and the Reality of AI Act Compliance
Every time European regulators demand accountability from frontier labs, the standard reaction is that compliance will break products. Anthropic's announcement detailing Claude's text watermarking shows how hollow that panic usually is. By adopting the SynthID method to bias pseudorandom token selection rather than injecting hidden characters or rewriting text, Anthropic is complying with the EU AI Act without degrading generation quality, introducing latency, or charging for extra tokens.
The mechanics here are clean engineering. By seeding next-token sampling with a deterministic key tied to preceding n-grams, detection becomes a statistical probability across longer passages while remaining invisible to the reader and hands-off on strict code or factual queries. It will not stop bad actors running unconstrained local weights, but it establishes practical provenance where enterprise and commercial traffic actually lives.
Sensible governance does not kill progress; it forces labs to solve real engineering problems instead of treating deployment like an eternal beta. The real test now will be how verification keys and tooling are shared with auditors and developers under the EU Code of Practice without centralizing validation entirely inside the model providers.
